Curriculum: Petits Francophones

The young francophone class welcomes children from kindergarten to 1st grade who understand and/or speak French, who may or may not have spent time in the French educational system.

Since classes take place at the end of the school day, EFBA classes feature playful, fun, and varied activities. Class objectives are to create or develop a connection to the French language and francophone cultures, and to develop a desire to learn and the children’s knowledge.
Teachers differentiate their instruction to best serve individual children’s need. They also work with an assistant when the class reaches 8 students.
The support and motivation of the children’s families are crucial to the success of the program. We recommend when possible to speak French at home, and to enjoy French whenever possible (games, books, magazines, movies), and to read bedtimes stories in French and cook French recipes.

The Program

Children work on writing and oral skills.
At this age, oral skills activities draw on many facets of children’s lives (my school, my day, my activities, my vacation, my birthday, etc.), and some more academic activities (memorizing and interpreting poetry, nursery rhymes, writing short poems, commenting on images, summarizing books, etc.)
In learning to read, children study sounds and their spellings, reading images, and start to decode written languages.
Through writing activities, children study the alphabet. They start to recognize syllables, different spellings of sounds and to create their own spellings for words, write words studied in class, copying, and drawing.
Part of the activities is dedicated to “ world discovery ”: days, months, seasons, weather, culture, French food and/or of francophone countries, and other activities adapted to children’s age, which are left up to the instructor’s choice.
