Grands Francophones

The older francophone class welcomes children from 2nd to 5th grade who understand and/or speak French, who may or may not have spent time in the French educational system.

Since classes take place at the end of the school day, EFBA classes feature playful, fun, and varied activities. Class objectives are to create or develop a connection to the French language and francophone cultures, and to develop a desire to learn and children’s knowledge.

Teachers differentiate instruction to best serve individual children’s need. They also work with an assistant when the class reaches 8 students.

The support and motivation of the children’s families are crucial to the success of the program. We recommend when possible to speak French at home, and to enjoy French whenever possible (games, books, magazines, movies. . . ), and to read bedtimes stories in French, to cook French recipes, etc...

The Program

Children work on oral and writing skills.

In oral skills, children learn to summarize, paraphrase, and re-tell stories and to describe various situations (based on their personal experiences, reading material, and pictures). They work on logical thinking and reasoning to argue their points of view. They memorize poems and songs.

To work on reading and writing, children continue to study different sounds of the French language and their spellings. Activities are varied, such as games, stories, poetry, and informational texts.

Through games and exercises, children study grammar, vocabulary, and conjugations, and learn to use reference materials and the dictionary.
Part of the activities is dedicated to “ world discovery”: francophone culture, food, the metric system/measurement instruments, telling time, reading the calendar, European currency, main historical events, and other activities adapted to children’s ages. These activities are left up to the instructor’s choice.
